Study explains how black holes keep growing despite powerful energy jets

New research has revealed why black holes never seem to run out of fuel, despite their powerful jets that blast surrounding gas far away. The study shows that these jets actually create a recycling process that feeds the black hole over time.

This discovery affects our understanding of how supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies grow and influence their host galaxies. It matters because black holes play a key role in galaxy evolution, and their growth mechanisms have long puzzled scientists.

The research, published in the journal Nature on May 15, 2024, used computer simulations to model the behavior of gas around a black hole. The simulations showed that the jets heat the surrounding gas, causing it to rise and then cool and fall back toward the black hole in a continuous cycle.

Earlier studies had suggested that black hole jets would simply push gas away, starving the black hole. But this new work indicates that the jets create a feedback loop that sustains the black hole's fuel supply.

The next step for researchers is to test these findings with observations from telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope. If confirmed, this mechanism could explain how black holes have grown so large over cosmic time.
