The satellite, known as the Mission Extension Vehicle-2 (MEV-2), is designed to dock with and extend the operational life of geosynchronous communication satellites that have run out of fuel. This mission, operated by Northrop Grumman, marks a significant step in on-orbit servicing technology, as it is the most advanced robotic servicing satellite publicly known to exist.

The primary beneficiary of this mission is Intelsat, whose Intelsat 901 satellite—launched in 2001 and running low on propellant—will be the first to receive a life extension. MEV-2 will dock with Intelsat 901 in geostationary orbit, taking over attitude control and station-keeping functions, allowing the satellite to continue operating for another five years. The mission matters because it addresses a critical challenge in space: the finite fuel supply of geosynchronous satellites, which often leads to premature retirement even when other systems are functional. By providing robotic refueling and servicing, MEV-2 could reduce space debris and lower the financial burden on satellite operators.
