Kingdom Hearts anime coming to Disney+

Disney announced on August 15, 2026, that an original Kingdom Hearts anime series is coming soon to Disney+ and Disney Channel. The reveal was made during the company's D23 fan event, where a teaser featuring a keyblade wielder was shown.

The anime will tell a brand-new tale that expands on the franchise's story so far while celebrating the characters from the games, according to Disney. The company has not yet released detailed information about the show, but the teaser's silhouette has led some fans to believe the character is not the games' protagonist Sora. Various Disney characters are expected to appear in the series.

The adaptation matters to fans because it promises an original story, which could raise concerns about staying true to the games. Disney addressed this by stating that the anime was developed with Tetsuya Nomura, the director and character designer behind the Kingdom Hearts titles, as well as the creative team at Square Enix.

Alongside the anime announcement, Disney showed a glimpse of Kingdom Hearts IV, which will feature a setting based on Pixar's Coco. Square Enix plans to release the franchise's next installment in late 2027.

The Kingdom Hearts franchise began as a video game series that combines Disney characters and worlds with original characters and a complex narrative. The anime adaptation marks the first time the series will be brought to television in this format.

No release date for the anime has been announced, but Disney said it is coming soon to both Disney Channel and Disney+.
