SpaceX acquires AI coding startup Cursor for $60 billion

SpaceX has acquired Cursor, the startup known for its AI coding tool, for $60 billion, the companies announced in June 2026.

Cursor said the deal gives it access to “the largest fleet of GPUs in the world,” enabling it to build and train better models and offer them to customers at lower cost.

The acquisition process began in April 2026, when the two companies teamed up on Cursor’s model training. SpaceX had merged with Elon Musk’s AI company xAI, and in July 2026 the combined entity became SpaceXAI.

After the July 2026 rebrand, SpaceXAI and Cursor released Grok 4.5, their first jointly built model. It was designed to “excel at coding, agentic tasks and knowledge work” and deliver results “at far lower costs.”

The companies have also released Grok 4.6, which builds on 4.5 and was trained to handle real-life tasks including general coding, web development, and computer-aided design. Cursor said Grok 4.6 provides an early look at what it can build together with SpaceXAI.
