Djokovic Stunned by Navone in US Open First Round

Novak Djokovic suffered the first Grand Slam first-round loss of his career since the 2006 Australian Open, falling to Argentina's Mariano Navone 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in the opening round of the US Open on Sunday, according to the ATP Tour and CBS Sports.

The loss snapped a 78-match winning streak in Grand Slam opening rounds for the four-time US Open champion and No. 4 seed, who had never previously lost before the third round at Flushing Meadows. Djokovic appeared visibly unwell during the four-and-a-half-hour match and faded physically after taking the second set, finishing with 70 unforced errors, 29 of them in the final two sets alone.

Navone, 25, won 63.3% of points played in the fourth and fifth sets to complete the comeback, a result he and analysts described as the biggest victory of his career. He advances to the second round of the US Open for the second consecutive year.

The defeat extends Djokovic's run without a Grand Slam title to 12 consecutive majors, matching the longest title drought of his career, a stretch from 2005 to 2007 early in his rise to the top of men's tennis.
