Man City agree £125m Enzo Fernández deal, equalling record

Manchester City have agreed a fee of £125 million with Chelsea for the Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández, according to reporting by ESPN and Sky Sports. The agreement, struck on deadline day, matches the highest fee ever paid by a British club.

That record was set last summer, when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak from Newcastle United for the same amount. City’s agreement equals it rather than breaking it.

The deal is agreed, not completed. Fernández has been given permission to undergo a medical, and the transfer becomes official only once that is done and the paperwork is filed. Neither club had confirmed the move publicly at the time of writing, and the reporting rests on unnamed sources rather than club statements.

For Chelsea the sale marks a substantial return. The club signed Fernández from Benfica in February 2023 for £107m, itself a British record at the time, and the £125m fee leaves them roughly £18m up on the deal — around £5m above the £120m they had been asking, according to ESPN.

The transfer is unusual in one respect that has nothing to do with the clubs involved: it would make Fernández a player who has moved twice for fees above £100m, a distinction almost no footballer holds.
