Cubs Set Franchise Record With 9 Home Runs vs. Brewers

The Chicago Cubs set a franchise record with nine home runs in a 17-3 rout of the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday night at Wrigley Field, according to game accounts from CBS Sports and Yahoo Sports.
Alex Bregman led the barrage with three home runs, while Tyrone Taylor and Nico Hoerner connected back-to-back in the first inning and Seiya Suzuki and Bregman went back-to-back in the fourth. Carson Kelly, Matt Shaw and Michael Conforto also went deep, with Shaw and Conforto taking Brewers position player Andrew Vaughn out of the park after he was pressed into pitching duty.
The nine-homer output ties the second-most in a single MLB game and sits one shy of the all-time record of 10, set by the Toronto Blue Jays against the Baltimore Orioles on Sept. 14, 1987.
Cubs starter Clay Holmes pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts. On the other side, Brewers starter Kyle Harrison allowed five home runs and nine earned runs in just 3 2/3 innings, and Vaughn's brief pitching stint left him with a 30.00 ERA.
With the outburst, Chicago closed out August with 62 home runs for the month, a National League record and the second-highest total by any team in a calendar month in MLB history, trailing only the New York Yankees' 74 home runs in August 2019.
The win improved the Cubs to 78-60, though they remained seven games behind the division-leading Brewers, who fell to 85-53.
