Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits $1 billion, 2026's fourth film to do so
Hollywood has delivered its fourth billion-dollar movie of 2026, as Sony and Marvel's "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" crossed the $1 billion mark globally on August 5, 2026. The film joins Universal's "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," Lionsgate's "Michael," and Disney and Pixar's "Toy Story 5" in reaching the milestone this year. Universal's "The Odyssey" is also closing in, with $912 million in global ticket sales through Sunday, and is expected to surpass $1 billion as it remains in theaters until at least mid-September.
The surge in high-earning films affects multiple studios and a diverse range of genres. Unlike 2019, when Disney dominated with seven of the nine billion-dollar titles, the 2026 hits are spread across Sony, Universal, Lionsgate, and Disney, and include not just sequels and franchise entries but also a musical biopic and an adaptation of an ancient epic poem. Box office analysts anticipate that Warner Bros.' "Dune: Part Three" and Disney and Marvel's "Avengers: Doomsday" will also reach the billion-dollar figure later this year, which would bring the total to at least six, the most in a single year since the pandemic shut down theaters six years ago.
This achievement matters because it signals a robust recovery for the theatrical industry, which is still chasing pre-pandemic levels. The domestic annual box office is on pace to cross $10 billion for the first time in seven years; through Monday, the year-to-date haul stood at $6.2 billion, down 11% from 2019. Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder of Box Office Theory, noted that the billion-dollar club has always been a special milestone and that the number of films crossing the threshold can indicate a banner year. The broad success suggests Hollywood can take more risks on genre films and spread wealth among more players.
Higher ticket prices are contributing to these hauls. According to EntTelligence, the average premium large format (PLF) ticket costs about $18.22 nationally, up 8% from 2023, and can exceed $25 in cities like New York or Los Angeles. In 2025, more than 16% of domestic tickets sold were for PLFs such as Imax, Dolby Cinemas, ScreenX, and 4DX, up from 15% in 2024 and 13.8% in 2023. Standard ticket prices have also risen: the average movie ticket now costs around $13.50, compared to just over $9 in 2019, per Cinema United and EntTelligence data.
Younger audiences are fueling the resurgence. Mike Polydoros, CEO of cinema marketing firm PaperAirplane Media, said Gen Z accounted for 49% of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day"'s opening-day audience and 30% of "The Odyssey"'s opening-day crowd. Gen Z, aged roughly 14 to 29, represented nearly 40% of all North American movie audiences in 2025, according to Rentrak, and attends more films per year than some older demographics. Internationally, more than 50% of the box office receipts for the four billion-dollar films have come from outside the U.S. and Canada, underscoring the global appetite. Paul Dergarabedian, head of marketplace trends for Rentrak, pointed out that no film has ever earned over $1 billion domestically alone; "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" came closest with $936.7 million.
