NASA to Showcase New Wind Tunnel in Virginia on July 31
NASA will officially open its first new wind tunnel in over four decades with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and media tour at Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, on Friday, July 31. The Flight Dynamics Research Facility (FDRF) replaces two older tunnels—the Langley 20-Foot Vertical Spin Tunnel and the 12-Foot Low-Speed Tunnel—and is designed to support flight dynamics research for all types of aircraft and spacecraft.
The event is open only to in-person media who are U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents. Journalists must RSVP by 5 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, July 29, to Kimiko Booker or Brittny McGraw. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, Langley Center Director Dr. Trina Dyal, and U.S. General Services Administration Administrator Edward C. Forst.
This milestone matters because the FDRF will advance NASA’s aeronautics, exploration, and science goals, including the Artemis program’s aim to establish a sustained human presence on the Moon and develop a Moon Base. The facility represents a major upgrade to the nation’s wind tunnel capabilities, which are critical for testing vehicles in controlled aerodynamic conditions.
According to NASA, the FDRF is the agency’s first major wind tunnel built after 1980. It specializes in flight dynamics research, covering everything from conventional aircraft to next-generation spacecraft. The new tunnel consolidates functions previously handled by two separate facilities, improving efficiency and expanding testing possibilities.
Looking ahead, the FDRF is expected to play a key role in developing technologies for lunar missions and other advanced aerospace projects.
