China can turn plastic waste to jet fuel at a low cost: study

Chinese researchers have developed a low-cost method to convert plastic waste into jet fuel, according to a study published in the journal Nature Communications. The process uses a catalyst to break down common plastics like polyethylene and polypropylene into hydrocarbons suitable for aviation fuel, achieving a conversion rate of over 90% at temperatures around 300 degrees Celsius. This breakthrough could help address the global plastic pollution crisis while providing a sustainable alternative to fossil-based jet fuel. The study was led by scientists at the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and involved collaboration with multiple institutions. The team tested the method on mixed plastic waste without requiring sorting or cleaning, significantly reducing preprocessing costs. The resulting fuel meets aviation standards, and the researchers estimate the process could be economically viable at scale. Next steps include pilot-scale testing and collaboration with industry partners to commercialize the technology within five years.
