Chandra X-ray Observatory reveals new image and sonification of galaxy Messier 94
NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has released a new composite image of the spiral galaxy Messier 94, also known as NGC 4736, on June 30, 2026. The image combines X-ray data from Chandra with visible-light observations from ground-based astrophotographers Brian Brennan and Remi Lacasse, revealing the galaxy’s bright inner starburst ring where new stars are forming.
This galaxy is located about 16 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Canes Venatici. The starburst ring is likely fueled by gas driven inward by the galaxy’s unique oval-shaped structure, which is visible in the new image. The X-ray emission, shown in red, orange, and blue, highlights hot gas and energetic processes, while the optical data adds the familiar spiral structure.
The release of this image matters because it provides a multi-wavelength view of star formation and galactic dynamics, helping astronomers understand how gas flows trigger bursts of star birth. The image has also been sonified, allowing people to experience the data through sound, with different pitches and rhythms representing the X-ray and optical features.
Chandra has observed Messier 94 before, but this new composite offers a fresh perspective by combining space-based X-ray and ground-based optical data. The image processing was done by L. Frattare and K. Arcand at the Chandra X-ray Center. No immediate next steps have been announced, but such releases often accompany scientific studies or public outreach efforts.
