OpenAI launches free AI access for 10,000 academic researchers

OpenAI will offer free access to its AI models for select academic researchers under a program announced July 29, 2026.

Called ChatGPT for Academic Researchers, the initiative begins with 10,000 participants in summer 2026 and scales to 100,000 scientists, mathematicians, and engineers through 2027.

Eligible researchers will receive access to the company's latest GPT-5.6 Sol Pro model and hands-on support. Each participant can invite up to four collaborators from their institution to join.

OpenAI said the free access formalizes a relationship in which researchers already use its models for data analysis and grant writing.

The commitment exceeds $250 million through 2027 to support scientific research. It follows a similar logic to ChatGPT Edu, the company's offering for schools.

By default, the company will not use researchers' data to train its models. The program, however, could spur research breakthroughs involving GPT models and make scientific fields more dependent on the company's tools, potentially generating future revenue from for-profit research.

The new program follows OpenAI's January 2026 launch of Prism, an AI tool for working with scientific journals and documents. Available to anyone with a ChatGPT account, Prism can verify citations and formatting. An early demo also generated lesson plans, a tedious task for research professors.
