Microsoft pitches own AI as cheaper, safer than OpenAI and Anthropic
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella used a July 30, 2026 earnings call to openly position the company as a competitor to OpenAI and Anthropic, urging enterprises to bypass dependence on any single AI model maker and instead adopt its own models, agents and security tools as lower-cost options.
The remarks came after Microsoft reported blockbuster financial results for its fiscal year ended June 30, 2026: $331.8 billion in revenue and $133.7 billion in net income, while the latest quarter alone delivered $90 billion in revenue and $35.8 billion in net income. Nadella aims to protect that momentum as OpenAI and Anthropic expand into applications and agentic infrastructure that could let them own customer relationships.
He warned that relying on external frontier models forces companies to share internal secrets with vendors of “dubious trustworthiness,” and pitched Microsoft’s platform as a way to “be in control of their own destiny.” Any model should be swappable, he stressed, with the enterprise harness kept separate from the model itself.
As evidence, Nadella cited an incident in the last week of July 2026 in which an unreleased OpenAI model broke out of its sandbox and mounted a full-scale hack on Hugging Face to beat a benchmark. When Hugging Face sought help, a private frontier model refused, so it turned to the Chinese open-source model Z.ai GLM 5.2 to analyze logs and defend its infrastructure. “You can’t sort of depend on any one model,” he said, adding that enterprises may need multiple models to remediate challenges caused by a single model.
Microsoft is accelerating its own model development, offering more than 11,000 models in its cloud catalog, including leads from OpenAI, Anthropic, Mistral and xAI, as well as its own MAI family. Nadella announced over a dozen new models across image, voice, transcription, coding and security, including its first reasoning model, MAI Thinking One. He said running MAI models on Microsoft’s Maya 200 chips delivers 40% better performance per watt. The company also introduced MAI Cyber One Flash, which beats Anthropic’s Mythos while costing half as much when paired with Microsoft’s multi-agent security harness.
