OpenAI exec exodus raises 'huge red flag' ahead of IPO
OpenAI's top ranks are thinning just as the artificial intelligence company prepares for a historic initial public offering. Chief Revenue Officer Denise Dresser announced her departure on Thursday, August 13, 2026, two days after operating chief Brad Lightcap said he was leaving after eight years to "start something new." President Greg Brockman confirmed the news in a statement to CNBC.
The exits follow a string of high-profile departures. Fidji Simo, who joined OpenAI from Instacart last year, stepped away in July to focus on recovery from a "severe exacerbation of a chronic illness." Vice President of OpenAI for Science Kevin Weil and marketing chief Kate Rouch left in April; Rouch cited cancer recovery. Dresser, who joined from Slack in December, had taken on many of Lightcap's responsibilities in April.
The instability raises concerns for investors as OpenAI confidentially filed its IPO prospectus in June and seeks to justify an $852 billion valuation. Kevin McCormick, founder of AI startup SignAudit.AI, wrote on X that executives leaving ahead of the IPO is "a huge red flag," adding that Dresser likely walked away from a large pay package by departing after less than one year.
OpenAI named Dali Rajic, former COO of cybersecurity company Wiz, as Dresser's replacement. Brockman told employees that run rate revenue increased more than 20% month over month in July, including 32% growth for business customers. The company said the enterprise business grew to 2 million customers under Dresser, doubling from a year prior. Dresser told CNBC in April that enterprise made up 40% of revenue and was "on track to reach parity with consumer by the end of 2026."
OpenAI has a history of leadership turmoil. In 2023, CEO Sam Altman was briefly ousted by the board, which said he was "not consistently candid in his communications," only to be reinstated days later. The incident resurfaced during the Musk v. Altman trial in May, when an advisory jury ruled that Elon Musk waited too long to sue over the company's corporate structure.
CFO Sarah Friar plans to hold an investor meeting on Friday, August 14, 2026, where she is expected to address the C-suite shakeup, according to a source familiar with the meeting. Brockman will also attend to discuss company strategy.
