NASA has completed a major upgrade to its Vertical Motion Simulator at Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley, the largest simulator of its kind in the world. The facility now uses modern digital technology instead of analog systems, giving pilots and researchers a more realistic and capable environment for testing next-generation aircraft and spacecraft.

The simulator, which has been in operation since 1979, can travel 60 feet vertically and 40 feet horizontally to recreate the motion of vehicles ranging from helicopters to lunar landers. The upgrade replaces the old analog systems with digital controls and adds a new dome with advanced 4K projectors that provide nearly 20/20 visual clarity and a wider field of view for pilots. According to Diana Acosta, aerospace simulation research and development branch chief at NASA Ames, the new configuration supports more aggressive mission tasks and gives crews a more realistic environment, strengthening how teams coordinate and react to challenging scenarios.

The changes matter because the simulator is used to prepare for missions that include human landings on the Moon and Mars, as well as testing next-generation air taxis and commercial aircraft. By improving the realism and flexibility of the simulator, NASA can better evaluate vehicle designs and pilot procedures before hardware ever leaves the ground, potentially leading to safer skies and more efficient air travel.

One of the most significant improvements is the ability to automatically line up and color-match images in the simulator’s visual system, a process that previously took hours or even days to do by hand. In addition, the simulator’s cab can now be reconfigured using lighter, removable inserts that include only the controls, seats, and panels needed for a specific vehicle. This replaces the old method of swapping out the entire cab, which was time-consuming and complex, and cuts the time needed to configure a simulation in half.

The Vertical Motion Simulator has a long history of shaping aviation and spaceflight research at NASA Ames. The recent upgrades build on that legacy by enabling tests of next-generation aircraft and spacecraft in a more realistic and efficient way. NASA announced the completion of the upgrades on August 12, 2026, and the facility is expected to support upcoming mission preparations, including Artemis lunar landings and future Mars exploration.
