Sony has introduced the FX5, a new cinema camera that brings open gate recording and RAW 5K capture to its professional lineup. The camera is designed for filmmakers and content creators who need high-quality, flexible footage for post-production. This matters because open gate recording allows for more cropping and reframing options in editing, while RAW 5K provides superior image quality and color grading flexibility. The FX5 records in 5K resolution at up to 60 frames per second in RAW, and supports open gate 4K at 120 fps. It features a full-frame sensor and Sony's E-mount, compatible with a wide range of lenses. The camera is expected to ship in late 2024, with a price tag of around $6,000. This release follows Sony's tradition of trickling down professional features to its consumer mirrorless cameras, suggesting that open gate and RAW recording may eventually appear in models like the A7 series. Industry analysts predict that the FX5 could set a new standard for mid-range cinema cameras, putting pressure on competitors like Canon and Blackmagic Design to offer similar capabilities.
