SK Hynix plunges 10% leading Asian tech stock sell-off
Asian technology stocks fell sharply on August 6, 2026, with South Korea’s SK Hynix plunging nearly 10%, tracking a sell-off in U.S. tech shares late on August 5.
SK Hynix tumbled 9.71% and Samsung Electronics dropped 6.13%.
In Japan, SoftBank Group lost 4.36%, Tokyo Electron fell over 5%, and memory chipmaker Kioxia declined 8.84%.
Taiwan’s TSMC slipped 1.46% and Seoul Semiconductor dropped 4.27%.
The declines followed a surge on August 5, when SoftBank soared more than 13%.
Despite the sell-off, J.P. Morgan said in a note dated August 5 that the tech rout in Asia had not derailed the AI investment cycle and that it does not expect hyperscalers to cut back on spending.
In a separate report also dated August 5, S&P Global noted that AI and defense spending are driving global growth, with the technology sector providing growing momentum. The report also showed that the global purchasing managers’ index output of tech equipment increased in July at the fastest rate since May 2021, and technology reported its fastest growth in ten months amid rising demand for software and IT services.
