Michigan water systems hit by cyberattacks as FBI probes 9 breaches

The FBI confirmed on August 1, 2026, that it is investigating cyberattacks on water systems in at least seven states, with Michigan and Minnesota identified as targets. Michigan reported breaches at nine water utilities, while Minnesota disclosed attacks on 30 sites, state officials said.

Dale George, director of communications for Michigan’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, said all nine systems continued to operate safely. Michigan received a federal cyber alert on July 28 about attempts to tamper with operational technology, and soon after, a small number of communities reported activity matching federal descriptions.

Minnesota IT Services said most confirmed attacks involved remote monitoring and control technology. As of July 30, no active requests for residents to modify water use were in effect, though some modifications had been requested earlier in the week.

An advisory from the FBI, CISA, and other agencies issued in late July 2026 warned that Iranian hackers have been targeting water and wastewater systems. Water infrastructure is often more vulnerable because of outdated cybersecurity.

Asked about the Minnesota attacks on July 31, President Donald Trump said, “I think Minnesota is behind it,” without evidence. “I don’t think there was an Iranian cyberattack.” Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said he believed Iran was responsible and blamed Trump’s cuts to federal employees for increased vulnerability. “Trump knows exactly who is responsible for this attack, and knows that other states were hit too,” Walz said.

The FBI said it is fully engaged with interagency partners and remains well-equipped to counter cyber threats. The investigation continues as authorities assess the scope and origin of the breaches.
