Charles Schwab Earnings Beat Estimates, Stock Falls
Charles Schwab Corporation reported record quarterly revenue and earnings for the second quarter of 2024, surpassing Wall Street estimates. The discount brokerage firm posted net income of $1.5 billion, or $0.75 per share, on revenue of $4.7 billion. Analysts had expected earnings of $0.73 per share on revenue of $4.6 billion. Despite the earnings beat, Schwab's stock fell in early trading as investors focused on higher-than-expected expenses.
The company's results were driven by a surge in retail investor activity, with daily average revenue trades (DARTs) rising 15% from the prior quarter to 5.8 million. Net new assets totaled $48 billion in the quarter, bringing total client assets to $8.9 trillion. Schwab's net interest income, a key profit driver, increased 8% year over year to $2.3 billion, benefiting from higher interest rates.
However, total expenses rose 6% from the previous quarter to $3.1 billion, exceeding analyst forecasts. Compensation and benefits costs increased due to higher headcount and incentive compensation. The expense miss overshadowed the revenue beat, leading to a decline in Schwab's share price on the day of the earnings release.
The earnings report comes amid a broader market rally that has boosted trading volumes and asset values. Schwab's results also reflect the ongoing shift of retail investors into stocks and other risk assets. Looking ahead, the company expects continued growth in client assets and trading activity, but management cautioned that expense control remains a priority. Analysts will be watching for updates on cost-cutting initiatives and the impact of potential interest rate cuts later this year.
