Mistral AI said on September 8, 2026 that it had closed a €3 billion Series D funding round at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion. The Paris-based company calls it the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company — a characterization that comes from Mistral's own announcement rather than from an independent tally.

Samsung Electronics led the round. The Scaleup Europe Fund, managed by EQT, and existing shareholder PSG Equity joined as co-leads. Mistral lists Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg as new investors. Existing backers that took part include a16z, ASML, NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures, General Catalyst, Lightspeed, BNP Paribas CIB and Bpifrance.

The timing matters because of where Mistral's price was a year ago. Euronews puts the company's previous valuation at €11.7 billion, set in 2025 in a round led by the Dutch chip-equipment maker ASML. Measured against that, the move to more than €21 billion is just under a doubling in roughly twelve months — steep, but short of the tripling-style jumps that have marked some US peers.

Mistral is pitching the raise as a bet on “sovereign” AI. Its announcement defines that as retaining control across four dimensions: data that stays inside an organization's boundaries, models that are controllable and customizable, compute that is private and predictable, and production systems that are fully auditable. That framing is aimed squarely at European governments and regulated industries — banks, airlines, health systems — that are reluctant to route sensitive workloads through US cloud providers. For those buyers, the practical question this round answers is whether a European alternative has the balance sheet to stay in the race rather than be acquired or outspent.

The company says the money will expand its frontier research, scale compute capacity for training larger models, build out infrastructure and accelerate commercial growth internationally. Mistral, founded in 2023, now operates in 20 countries and serves more than 125 enterprise customers, naming Airbus, ASML and HSBC among them.

What the announcement does not say is as telling as what it does. Mistral discloses no revenue figure, no headcount and no timeline for the infrastructure buildout. It also describes Samsung strictly as a lead investor, with no commercial or manufacturing partnership attached — so the strategic logic behind the largest cheque in the round remains Samsung's to explain. Those disclosures, not the valuation, are what will show whether the €21 billion figure is supported by a business, and Mistral has not said when it will publish them.
