Jeff Bezos group buys minority stake in Liverpool FC for $7.1B
A consortium that includes Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has agreed to buy a minority stake in Liverpool Football Club from Fenway Sports Group, the club announced on August 14, 2026. The deal gives the group an option to become the controlling owner within a year.
The investment group, called 1892 Holdings, is managed by businessman Amit Bhatia, a former co-owner of Queens Park Rangers. Bhatia will become Liverpool's vice chairman and join an expanded board. The consortium also includes K5 Sports and EE Capital, the family office of Elaine and Eduardo Saverin, the co-founder of Facebook. Bezos will not have a board seat, but Bryan Baum of K5 Sports and Elaine Saverin will, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The transaction values the minority stake at about $7.1 billion, with the largest contribution—more than $1 billion—coming from K5 Global, where Bezos is the lead investor. The option to become majority shareholder is set at a valuation of around $8 billion over the next 12 months, according to people familiar with the matter who were not authorized to speak publicly. Bezos, whose net worth is $272 billion according to Forbes, has previously explored ownership in the NFL's Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks.
Fenway Sports Group President Mike Gordon said in a press release that Liverpool has always been built by thinking beyond one season, and that the club's approach continues to attract interest from respected investors. He added that it became clear Amit and the consortium shared the club's long-term philosophy. The new minority owners will support Liverpool's long-term ambitions by bringing together experts from global business, technology, and investment, the club said.
Liverpool FC competes in the Premier League in England and has won 20 league titles, most recently in 2025. CNBC's 2026 Official Global Soccer Team Valuations listed Liverpool as the fourth-most valuable soccer club in the world, valued at $6 billion. The investment group declined to comment on the deal.
