The James Webb Space Telescope has discovered galaxies in the early universe that appear surprisingly mature, with stars that seem to have been forming for billions of years—even though the universe was only a few hundred million years old at the time. This finding challenges current models of galaxy formation and evolution.

Astronomers using Webb have identified galaxies that are rich in dust, including one metal-poor galaxy that is forging iron dust earlier than theoretical models allow. These galaxies, described as cosmic 'factories,' were already producing stardust in significant quantities when the universe was in its infancy.

The discovery matters because it suggests that galaxies may have formed and evolved much faster than previously thought. The presence of mature-looking galaxies so soon after the Big Bang forces scientists to reconsider the timeline and processes of early cosmic structure formation.

The universe is estimated to be 13.8 billion years old. The galaxies observed by Webb date back to when the cosmos was only a few hundred million years old, yet they show signs of having formed stars for billions of years. Specific numbers from the observations indicate that these galaxies are surprisingly evolved for their epoch.

Earlier telescopes, such as Hubble, had hinted at the existence of early galaxies, but Webb's infrared capabilities allow it to see further back in time and with greater detail. This research builds on previous studies that have found unexpectedly massive galaxies in the early universe.

The next steps involve further observations with Webb to confirm these findings and to study the chemical composition and star formation histories of these ancient galaxies. Scientists hope to refine their models to account for this new data, which may lead to a revised understanding of how the first galaxies formed and evolved.
