Titan's equatorial dunes are water ice coated in hydrocarbons
Scientists have discovered that the vast dunes stretching across Saturn's moon Titan are made not of sand, but of water ice grains coated with hydrocarbons that precipitated from the moon's thick orange atmosphere. These dunes, which reach heights of about 100 meters and extend hundreds of kilometers in length, are concentrated along Titan's equatorial regions. The dunes are composed of particles that originated as water ice from Titan's crust, which then became coated with organic compounds falling from the sky. This process makes the grains behave like sand despite their icy composition. Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a substantial atmosphere, and its methane cycle is often compared to Earth's water cycle. The dunes were first observed by NASA's Cassini spacecraft, which orbited Saturn from 2004 to 2017. Cassini's radar and infrared instruments allowed scientists to map the dune fields and analyze their composition. The new analysis confirms that the dune grains are not pure water ice but a mixture of ice and organic material. Researchers now plan to study how the hydrocarbon coating affects the grains' transport and erosion, which could provide insights into Titan's weather patterns and seasonal changes.
