Super Micro shares rise on preliminary outlook showing growing backlog
Super Micro Computer Inc. shares surged in trading on Monday after the company released a preliminary financial outlook that indicated a growing backlog of orders. The server and storage technology firm, which has seen its stock more than double this year amid the artificial intelligence boom, provided the update ahead of its full quarterly earnings report.
The preliminary results show that Super Micro expects net sales for the fiscal fourth quarter to be between $5.3 billion and $5.7 billion, above the previous forecast range of $5.1 billion to $5.5 billion. The company also reported that its backlog has increased, signaling strong demand for its AI-optimized servers and liquid cooling solutions. The news sent shares up by as much as 8% in after-hours trading.
The positive outlook matters because Super Micro is a key player in the AI infrastructure space, competing with larger rivals like Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. Its ability to secure more orders suggests that enterprise spending on AI hardware remains robust, which could have broader implications for the tech sector. The company's stock has been volatile this year, with gains driven by AI enthusiasm but tempered by concerns about competition and margin pressures.
Super Micro's fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30. The company is scheduled to report full results on August 6. The preliminary figures also included adjusted earnings per share of $8.08 to $8.14, compared to the analyst consensus of $7.62. The company attributed the stronger performance to improved supply chain execution and higher demand for its AI platforms.
Looking ahead, Super Micro's preliminary outlook suggests that the AI boom continues to fuel growth for hardware makers. However, the company faces challenges including potential component shortages and increasing competition. Investors will be watching the full earnings report for more details on margins and future guidance.
