Scientists find brain rhythm key to Parkinson's DBS success
Deep brain stimulation (DBS) appears to ease Parkinson's disease motor symptoms by activating a network between the subthalamic nucleus and frontal brain areas that communicates through a 20–35 Hz beta rhythm, according to a study published in Brain.
Professor Dr. Andreas Horn of the University of Cologne led the study, with an interdisciplinary team from the University Hospitals of Cologne and Düsseldorf, Harvard Medical School and Charité Berlin. The work is the first to combine electrophysiology and brain imaging to map the spatial location and timing of the DBS response network simultaneously.
Stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus is already an established treatment for Parkinson's motor symptoms. The strength of the identified network connection was associated with individual patients' motor improvement after electrode implantation.
The team studied fifty patients and one hundred brain hemispheres, recording brain activity simultaneously through implanted DBS electrodes and magnetoencephalography (MEG).
Dr. Bahne Bahners, first author and a researcher at Düsseldorf University Hospital, said the identified rhythm may act as a communication channel between the subthalamic nucleus and the cerebral cortex, mediating the therapeutic effects of DBS.
The study, titled 'The Deep Brain Stimulation Response Network in Parkinson's Disease Operates in the High Beta Band', was largely funded by the Professor Klaus Thiemann Foundation.
The findings could help adjust DBS settings more precisely for patients who have not yet benefited optimally. As of August 12, 2026, studies are underway to examine how DBS causes changes within brain networks.
