Microsoft tests free ad-supported cloud gaming for Xbox Insiders

Microsoft has begun testing a free, ad-supported version of its Xbox Cloud Gaming service for Xbox Insiders. Starting today, eligible users can stream games they already own from their libraries without a paid subscription, but sessions are limited to one hour. Ads will only appear before a gaming session begins, and the option is entirely voluntary—those with an active cloud gaming subscription can continue without ads.

The test is available only to Xbox Insiders and will run for a limited time. This move could make cloud gaming more accessible to players who do not want to commit to a monthly subscription. Microsoft previously began internal testing of an ad-supported tier late last year, according to sources cited by The Verge. The current public test marks a significant step toward potentially launching a broader ad-supported offering.

If successful, this model could expand Microsoft's reach in the cloud gaming market, competing with services like NVIDIA GeForce Now and Amazon Luna. The company has not announced when the test will end or if it will lead to a permanent free tier. For now, Xbox Insiders can try the ad-supported streaming option and provide feedback to Microsoft.
