IMAX stock surges on strong Q2 earnings and 'The Odyssey' optimism
IMAX reported a strong second quarter for fiscal 2026, with revenues and profit rising as the company benefits from a surge in demand for premium large-format screens. The results, announced on Thursday, sent shares of the company higher in after-hours trading.
The company's performance was driven by a growing appetite among moviegoers for premium experiences, which has boosted IMAX's box office revenue and theater installations. CEO Richard Gelfond highlighted the upcoming release of Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey' as a 'transformational event' for the company, expected to further accelerate momentum.
For the quarter ended June 30, IMAX reported revenue of $89.5 million, up 12% from the same period last year. Net income rose to $12.3 million, or $0.23 per share, compared to $9.8 million, or $0.18 per share, a year earlier. The company also signed agreements for 35 new theater systems during the quarter.
IMAX has been capitalizing on a broader industry trend toward premium screens, as traditional cinema attendance faces pressure from streaming services. The company's network now includes over 1,700 theaters globally, with a growing presence in markets like China and the Middle East.
Looking ahead, IMAX expects continued growth driven by a strong film slate, including 'The Odyssey' and other major releases. The company is also expanding its partnership with studios to offer more exclusive content and enhanced formats, positioning itself for further gains in the premium cinema market.
