AMD and Anthropic sign major chips-and-investment deal
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) has signed a major deal with artificial intelligence startup Anthropic, combining chip supply with a significant financial investment. The agreement, reported exclusively by The Wall Street Journal, positions AMD as a key hardware provider for Anthropic, which develops the AI model Claude.
The deal directly affects Anthropic, which will gain access to AMD's AI chips, and AMD, which secures a prominent customer in the competitive AI chip market. This partnership matters because it intensifies the rivalry between AMD and Nvidia, the dominant supplier of AI processors, and underscores the growing demand for alternatives in the AI hardware space.
Under the terms, AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, with the investment structured over several years. The chip supply component ensures Anthropic uses AMD's Instinct series GPUs for training and deploying its AI models. Specific dates for the investment tranches were not disclosed in the report.
This deal follows a broader trend of AI startups securing hardware commitments alongside funding. Anthropic has previously received investments from Google and Amazon, both of which also provide cloud computing services. The AMD agreement adds another major chip partner to Anthropic's roster.
Looking ahead, the partnership is expected to accelerate Anthropic's model development and give AMD a stronger foothold in the AI chip market. The investment may also influence other AI startups to seek similar integrated deals with hardware makers, reshaping the competitive landscape.
