Alibaba unveiled its most powerful artificial intelligence model, Qwen3.8-Max, on August 3, 2026, sending its shares up 4.5% in New York premarket trading and 7% on the Hong Kong exchange.

The model contains 2.4 trillion parameters, the numerical settings that shape AI processing, and supports a context window of up to 1 million tokens, enabling it to handle thousands of pages at once. It is slated for release the week of August 10, 2026.

Benchmark results released by the company show Qwen3.8-Max delivering scores comparable to or better than Anthropic's Fable 5, ranking second in the Vision Arena and fifth in the Text Arena.

In an internal test, the model spent 16 days autonomously building and refining an AI coding tool with minimal human input.

Other capabilities include handling real-world tasks such as legal document review, financial research, and architectural 3D modeling, undertaking long-horizon research, and converting hundred-page documents, television series, or 100-hour livestreams into searchable, interactive knowledge hubs.

The launch intensifies the U.S.-China AI rivalry, coming after domestic competitor Moonshot AI released Kimi K3 earlier in August 2026 with 2.8 trillion parameters, making it China's largest AI model.
